Rosa went down in history as a brave and fighting woman.
On December 1955, in Montgomery (Alabama) Rosa Parks was returning from work. She got on the bus and took a seat at the back, in the places allowed for black citizens. As the bus traveled, seats began to be missing and some people remained standing.
The driver stopped the bus to ask three black women to get up, realizing that there were white people standing. Rosa Parks refused(Such a rebell!). Obviously, she was arrested.
She belonged to an association who fought for the civil rights of African Americans. Her mates began a protest shortly after she was arrested:
"We are asking all blacks not to get on buses on Monday. You can miss class one day. If you work, take a taxi or walk. But please do not take any bus on Monday. Please stay out of buses on Monday.”
The "Monday" of protest lasted more than a year. For 381 days, the black population of the city of Montgomery refused to get on any bus. The boycott involved 42,000 people, which accounted for 70% of bus users.
Finally, in November 1956, the Supreme Court of the United States declared racial segregation on buses unconstitutional. The population that had been segregated got back on the buses, now they could sit wherever they wanted.
When Rosa Parks decided not to get up from her seat, she changed the laws of her country. She was not the first person who rebelled, but circumstances led her to become the "mother of the civil rights movement." It is an example that small actions can change the world. So...let´s act now!
From her we should learn to fight against social injustices.
This video explains a bit more about Rosa, it talks about her biography. It is great for those who want to learn a bit more!
